Baby Sign Language Basics - Fundamental Advice for Signing with Your Baby

When many people first decide to teach their child to sign, they jump right in with the first words without laying the proper groundwork for success. That is, they do not review some of the fundamentals that will make signing easier and more rewarding for both parent and child. In this article, we cover two of the elements to help ensure you have sucess with baby sign language. We cover the issues of initial timing and content. That is, we review when you should start signing with your child, and, in this context, what words you should first teach your child to sign.

The Timing Question- When to Start

A threshold question that parents have when they decide to teach their child to sign is at what age to begin the teaching process. As with most questions like this, there is no hard and fast rule on an exact age to begin signing. Every child is different, developing at his or her own pace. Most experts agree, however, that children cannot differentiate between signs in any meaningful way prior to 6 months of age. More likely, a child will begin to distinguish signs at around 10 months of age.

Generally, we recommend that people start to to introduce the first signs when the child is 6 to 9 months old. Your child will begin making basic signs when she is around 10 months of age. Starting around 12 months of age, you can start introducing some more absract, secondary signs. As your child gets older, and begins speaking his first words, you should start combining signs for "baby sentences". But again, there is no definite time frame for which your baby will develop signs.

Always pay attention to your child's body language and facial expressions for cues as to when she is ready to start the learning process. Use your intuition in this regard. Teaching sign langauge should be a natural process between you and your baby. When a baby starts sitting up and showing interest in what is going on around him, they are likely ready to begin learning signs. In particular, if your child is following what you’re doing with your hands, she may very well welcome your instruction. These nonverbal cues will tell you that baby is now ready to be taught.

Lots of children don’t make their first sign until 10 months of age or later, and some not before 12 months. Please do not get frustrated if your child does not immediately sign back to you. It may seem like it is taking her forever. But rests assured. Althouh the first few signs may come very slowly, one day your child will start to learn signs at a rapid pace. You will probably have a hard time keeping up! And then the pace may slow again. Teaching your baby sign language will be filled with stops and starts and fast and slow periods. But if you stick with it, you will succeed in teaching your child to sign.

The Word Question- What to Sign When

After you have decided it is time to start signing with your child, you must choose which words to start with. It is important that you choose only a few basic words to begin teaching your baby. Otherwise, you may overwhelm your baby, and yourself, with a large number of signs. We suggest that you only work on three to four new signs at any given time. Once your child learns a sign you are working on, add another sign to teach him.

Babies will recognize a sign before they begin using it as their own. The recognition of words is known as “receptive language”, while being able to form words (including signs) is called “expressive language”. Pay attention to your baby's facial expressions when you are teaching him a sign. Your child's expression may tell you when she begins to recognize the sign. For example, his eyes may light up with a smile when you sign the word “milk”. After she recognizes a sign, your baby will likely begin "expressing" that sign soon thereafter.

Finally, remember to always introduce and reinforce new signs at the appropriate moment in time. Again, working on a handful of signs, introduce them before, during, and/or after an activity that goes with the sign. A great time to teach “milk”, for example, is when you are giving your baby milk and after they are finished drinking their milk. Conversely, try not to teach a sign out of context. If your child is playing with a toy truck, do not try teach the sign for milk.

Best wishes and good luck in teaching your chlid to sign. Stay tuned for our next article for more tips to succeed in your signing endeavors. For now, click the following link for our website and more information on baby sign language.

Considering Making Soaps & Candle And Soap Making As Our Hobbies

The art of recipe for making soap has been, in a measure, known and followed for many ages, proving a source of industry and advantage to various nations and individuals. It may therefore interest some of our readers if we attempt to trace its origin and progress as indicated by the writings of the earlier authors. Pliny, for instance, the Roman historian, informs us that the art of manufacturing soap is the invention of the Gauls, and that the best article made by them was a combination of goats' tallow and the ashes of the beech-tree. They also seem to have been acquainted with both hard and soft soaps.

The Romans eventually acquired the knowledge of how to make lye soap from the Gauls, by whom this branch of industry was, with their conquests, soon spread over Europe. Whoever may have been the originators of soap making, the Romans were undoubtedly familiar with it. Galen, at least, mentions it in his works, and confirmatory of this statement, we may add that a soap maker’s shop, with its utensils and products, was discovered among the ruins and ashes of Pompeii, which was destroyed by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in the first century of the Christian era. Soap was often used by the Romans as a cosmetic, for Pliny tells us that soap, with which the Germans colored their hair red, was imported into Rome for the use of the fashionable ladies and their gallants in that city. This cosmetic was probably tinged with the juice of a plant.

Moving on from talking about wholesale soap making supplies and before we recur further to less remote times, we will endeavor to answer the question, "What substitutes were employed previous to the invention of soap?" Soap, both hard and soft, as it is well known, is produced by the union of the fats and the alkalis; by hard soap, we mean such as have soda, and by soft soap is understood that which has potassa for its basis. Water alone will not remove oily substances from any surfaces to which they may adhere, but a solution of soap, being always more or less alkaline, though its constituents may be united in their number of equivalents, will, nevertheless, render the oil freely miscible with water, so that it can be easily erased. A similar effect is produced by using a mixture of water and lixivious salts. The gall of animals and the juice of certain plants, also possess the property of removing dust and dirt, It does not, however, appear that gall was employed by the ancients, but it is certain that in washing they used saponaceous plants.

My favorite place in the house, as a kid!

Growing up, I was surrounded by a family who loved to cook and our kitchen always smelled fragrant like a Hispanic restaurant. Our Pantry Cabinet was always filled with an abundance of food, almost too much food sometimes. There were spices and tortillas and cans of refried beans, as well as bottles and bottles of Spanish soda. Our Kitchen Pantry Storage was always filled and my parents had never let it go empty.

When we had guests come and visit and to talk my family would make huge dishes of food that sometimes required two to carry. My mother would make her specialty dish called “arroz con pollo”. In English, this means “rice with chicken”. Whether you were Spanish or not, everyone loved this meal. The chicken is cooked for hours in a flavored broth and then it is pieced off into freshly boiled rice. Traditional Spanish food does not have much flavor, so my parents always used to spice it up with more spices from our pantry. My parents always made delicious food and at the end of the meal, there were almost always leftovers. I loved leftovers because the food from the day before tastes even better the second time around. My parents would pack it in little containers and I would eat it for lunch the next day.

Lunch was a wonderful time of day for my mother and me, growing up. My father would leave for his job and my mom and I would be home alone. My mother would make me some of the most delicious lunches I had ever had. Some days she would make me a simple but delicious grilled cheese sandwich with succulent tomatoes and tomato soup. Other days my mom would go all out and put together empanadas and quesadillas for me and my neighborhood friends. She would fry them up or bake them and allowed all of us to drink some Spanish soda with our delicious treats. My friends all loved my mother’s cooking because many of them were not Hispanic and their mothers did not cook Spanish food; it was a real treat for them.

Late at night ,sometimes, when my parents had gone to their room I would sneak back into my favorite room and open our large pantry. Once I was inside I was amazed by everything that we had in it. Some of the things sitting in the pantry were things that I would never have imagined of using. I would eat a delicious Spanish baked cookie that my mother would buy from the market and then go back to bed. Sometimes my mother would hear me and say “Bed! Now!” Then I knew that I was in big trouble and I went to my room immediately, but first I finished my cookie.

Everyone has a special place in their house, mine happened to be my family kitchen. Food has always been a big part of our family getting together and it may be yours too, but if not, your family memory is just as important as mine.
