Coffee Tables Aren’t Just for Feet
Coffee tables aren't just for feet, even though they make a great place to prop them up. They give your living room or family room a sense of intimacy and coziness. For instance, in rooms that are oversized, placing coffee-tables near a couple chairs and a sofa creates a smaller seating area that makes the room more relaxed and lived in.
Because they highlight, or accentuate, a room's theme, they are sometimes known as accent tables. If a living room has a heavy country theme, coffee tables can hold baskets, bears, or other country decor items. They can also hold art pieces or knick knacks that keep with the country air. Because of this ability to highlight a room's theme, coffee tables can complete a room's decor.
A coffee table doesn't have to be placed in front of a sofa; it can also be used as an end table. A room needs a considerable amount of space to have a table in front of a sofa or a couple chairs; some living rooms or family rooms may not be that big. As an end table, there's no need for the extra space. Plus, if someone wants extra lighting, a lamp placed on an end table is very convenient.
Coffee tables come in such a wide variety of styles that it may be hard to choose just one for your living room or family room. A good rule of thumb is to match it with the rest of your room's decor. Is your room more streamlined, where bold colors and hard lines rule? Then choose a sleek and boldly colored coffee table to complete the look.
On the other hand, if you're purchasing the coffee table for a room that is filled with softer forms and more muted colors, the angled, boldly colored coffee-tables won't fit at all. Instead, you should stick with a table that has more rounded edges and a softer color. Also keep in mind the materials used, such as wood or chrome. Choose the same key materials for your tables as what's in your main dcor items and furniture.
Aesthetics aren't the only job of the coffee table; they can be areas used for storage or organization. Oftentimes coffee tables aren't very high off the ground, but they usually have at least one drawer. Some coffee tables act as mini shelving units, with shelves in the middle or along the sides. If you want a bigger storage area inside your coffee tables, consider old style trunks. In these, you can store seasonal items, such as blankets.
Since coffee tables are such a staple of the average home, an industry of sorts has risen around it: the coffee table book. The coffee table book is much larger in size than the average book, with covers that are almost works of art in themselves. You may have seen a coffee table book that you wanted just because the cover was so beautiful. These books are pictorial in nature and are meant to be visually enjoyed and quickly perused.
And let's not forget the comfort coffee tables can bring to a room. After a hard day at work or school, it's nice to be able to sink into a soft chair or sofa and prop your feet up. With a coffee table, you can do that. Just be careful not to knock over the accent items or the coffee table book! Maybe you can have a trunk style coffee table for just such foot propping.
Coffee tables are easy to overlook, but they play an important role in a living room or family room. They carry out and highlight your room's theme, thereby giving your room a sense of completeness. They're also functional by helping with storage. If you need a reading lamp, coffee tables are there to provide a space for that. Since coffee tables raise the comfort level and enhance the style of any room, don't forget them when decorating.
