Is Dust and Odour Escaping from Our Waste and is Waste Likely to Make Me Ill?

Any waste management operations, including incineration and landfilling can give rise to dust and odours.

These can be minimised by good building design; performing operations under controlled conditions indoors; and generally through good working practices Also, effective management to suppress dust from vehicle movements can reduce dust from landfill sites.

Additionally, incineration processes and other MSW waste plants normally use the air demand of the combustion process or simply large fan systems to operate the working areas under negative pressure.

This means that air is in general drawn into the building through the waste handling area to minimise the risk of dust and odour problems.

With these controls in place, waste incineration processes are not normally sources of dust and odour, and therefore dust and odour escaping from our waste is minimal and not likely to make anyone ill in the UK.
